Anne of Green Gables Cover and Interior

For the interior, I reversed the focus of the typography, using elements of the more decorative typography from the cover for the title on the title page and the more legible serif typeface from the cover for everything else. With ample margins, a simple drop cap at the start of each chapter, and a font size on the upper end of average, the layout captures all the charm of a middle-grade classic.

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery is a classic children’s novel telling the story of the hopeful orphan Anne and her new life at Green Gables in the idyllic Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. In my design of the cover and interior spread for a typography course, the most important goals were to make the typography on the cover a feature, rather than just a complement to imagery, and for the typography in the interior to complement the cover’s while still flowing smoothly for the reader.

As the basis of my overall direction, I chose to feature an interior and exterior view of Green Gables since the setting is almost as much of a character as Anne. I also decided to execute the illustrated background in a more modern style as a bridge between the timeless story and modern readers.

My copy of Anne of Green Gables also included two additional volumes from the series, which presented some challenges of how to appropriately integrate this less typical type of information, but also opportunities, especially the wide spine.
